(800) 772-1413
This number, 1-800-772-1413, is owned by Portfolio Recovery, which is a bill collector / debt buyer.
They're likely calling because they think they can collect money from you, or possibly that you know somebody they're after, so they may want information from you.
Often a bill collector will call you repeatedly until you answer the phone or until they give up and sell the debt / give up the account to someone else. If they *own* the debt that could be a very long time.
There's a lot of misinformation out there about how to properly deal with debt collectors. It's always wise to seek a consultation with an attorney in your area to get straight on what your rights really are.
Another option is debt consolidation, if you want to go that route.
Here's an interesting (although commrcial) video I found that goes in depth with respect to Portfolio Recovery, if you're interested in learning more and getting another perspective:

Update 11/28/13: It looks like they're using "predictive dialing" (a machine dials numbers), so if they do something like ring twice then hang up, it's probably not personal, it's just that their operator may have been connected to a different party. Hope that helps.
The only problem I'm having is ever time I answer there is no one on the other end. EVERY TIME!
ReplyDeleteYeah, that's the predictive dialing system at work -- it has the gall to dial your number and keep you "on hold" while it's waiting for another agent to hang up from a different call. Fun times. :)
